"I wonder what goes on in that head of yours." A platinum-haired man remarked, staring curiously at a teenage girl who was tying her purple hair into a messy terra-twist. She kicked a shovel off the dry, packed ground and caught it, then turned to look at him. "What's to wonder about? I seek excitement in my life. Doesn't everybody?" The ground crunched as she drove her shovel in, scooping the hardened earth into a pile. "It's not like..." Crunch. "...I'm the only one..." Scoop. "...who goes..." Crunch. "...around looking..." Scoop. "... for fun." She sighed heavily, pulling the cloth from her belt to wipe her brow. She had been digging for hours, while Serpent had sat casually on a heat-worn boulder, observing lazily. "You know, if you didn't plan on helping, why did you follow me?" Mimet turned to face Serpent, stabbed her shovel into the ground, and leaned on it. Serpent stared back, expressionless. Finally, he shrugged. "You're interesting. It's very rare to cross paths with a person like yourself."
"Uh huh." Mimet bit her lip, then sighed. "It's not here. As I thought, we have to find away across that. " She jerked her thumb at a large pool of lava. Serpent's eyes wandered from her thumb, over the lava, and finally to a dark cave, almost impossible to see with the thick steam.
"How do you suggest we get across?"
"I don't. But we're going to do it anyway." A close-lipped grin of excited determination spread across Mimet's face. For a moment, Serpent contemplated the sanity of this girl. Then he let out a mental sigh. It didn't matter. It was exactly the reason she was so interesting.
